Play Among the Elk at Estes Park Sunday September 18

Every September, we play at scenic Lake Estes Golf Course among all the elk. The nine-hole course borders the lake and Big Thompson River. The courses closes Sunday for 90 days due to TOO MANY ELK.  It reopens on December 1 and stays open all winter.

Huge bulls fight for their herd on the golf course --while we are playing golf.

Thousands of tourists pay to drive into adjacent Rocky Mountain National Park to maybe see and hear the elk. We play golf in the middle of a herd under the watchful eye of a course ranger.

First we meet for lunch at 11 at the historic Estes Park Golf Course's Hangar Restaurant. It is a no-host lunch.  Hamburgers are big. Then we drive over to play the little nine-hole course on the other side of the lake.

Before we head home, we vote on a place to eat on the way home to Denver. The popular neighborhood restaurant is before we get to the first carpool location.   Maybe the Blue Parrot in Louisville again.

Golf costs only $20 but lunch and dinner are extra. Carpoolers share gas expenses.

Golfers living southeast can meet at 9 a.m. at the King Soopers lot at Hampden & Monaco. Others meet at the Park & Ride at 120th & Huron and I-25 at 9:30.  The south carpoolers stop by before heading to Estes Park.

Those driving their own cars can meet us for lunch or at 12:30 p.m. at Lake Estes Golf Course.

Singles Beginner Golf--Every Monday at 6

Our weekly "Learn to Golf & Social" for adult singles 50+ is held at Kennedy Golf Course every Monday afternoon.  Ladies can learn a new recreational activity. The men are happy to help them.

This is not for serious competition golfers.   It is for adult singles meeting through golf. Our "really-beginner" golf mixers start on the south patio of the Kennedy clubhouse.

We meet at 5:00 and tee off until 6 p.m. for those arriving late after commuting from work.

Our beginners play on the short Par-3 Course at Kennedy Golf Course at East Hampden and South Havana.

In this "scramble" event everyone hits their first drive. Then the ball that landed in the best location is selected.  Other players pick up their ball and hit their next shots from there.  Experienced golfers are teamed with beginners to give tips on techniques and help them learn on-course skills.

Some women have already taken lessons but never felt comfortable playing on a full-length course. Here you can.  It is very relaxed.

$15 per person includes green fee, tee time, instruction and organization. Loaner sets of 4-5 clubs are available free.

The Par-3 can be played in under two hours. Traditional golf on a nine hole course takes more than 2 1/2 hours and is more expensive. You do not have to play each week or rush from work.
If  it is raining, we go directly to the Fresh Fish Company bar.

Later we go to the nearby Fresh Fish Company (next to The Proof Nightclub on East Hampden) for their happy hour with reduced priced drinks and seafood appetizers.  Shrimp cocktails, coconut shrimp, calamari, gumbo, clam chowder and prime rib sandwiches. Around  30 other adult singles (some golfers, some not) join us there.

Playing nine holes of golf after work is complicated and still expensive. Most golf courses already host afternoon and evening leagues.  Golfers pay up front for the entire season.  Remaining same-day, nine-hole tee times are reserved early in the day.

Our adult singles have busy lives and don't want an every week commitment. Also, it may rain or you may have other plans.

A great little course to play is Emerald Greens at Windsor Gardens located on East Alameda just south of Lowry.  This is a short but not an easy course. Experienced golfers can practice their short game skills--2/3 of your golf game.  Plus you will meet some interesting singles.

"If some superior, macho golfer pars this entire course, I will return his green fee!"   golf host John Edwards.
